In June and July 2012 the St. Margarethen Opera Festival will be putting on the popular children's opera "Hänsel & Gretel". In Papageno's Opera World, young music-lovers can look forward to a delightful story in an entertaining and witty production. German composer Engelbert Humperdinck's work was a huge success from its very first performance in 1893, and has lost none of its popularity to this day. No lesser figure than Richard Strauss conducted the first performance, and Humperdinck's sister Adelheid Wette wrote the libretto based on the world-famous fairy-tale by the Brothers Grimm.
The well-known story of the brother and sister living in poverty with their parents, who get lost while searching for berries in the forest and are taken captive by the wicked witch, has a happy ending. Many of the songs from Humperdinck's wonderful score became popular hits in their own right, such as "Ein Männlein steht im Walde" or "Suse, liebe Suse, was raschelt im Stroh". Manfred Waba is the producer of this "Hansel & Gretel", and he also designed the sets. His previous productions in Papageno's Opera World have shown that Waba has a unique talent for capturing children's attention!
