Info

From July 8th to August 23rd, 2009, the monumental sandstone backdrop of the Roman quarry sees Guiseppe Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto”.

The opera focuses on the story of Rigoletto, the Duke of Mantua’s jester. In the Roman quarry, “Rigoletto” will be staged by the Italian director Renzo Giaccheri.

“The greatest material and maybe the greatest of all modern dramas”, Verdi excitedly wrote about Victor Hugo’s drama "Le roi s’amuse", which he adopted for his opera – a work composed in a creative frenzy. In Verdi’s interpretation of the drama, Paris is Manuta, and the historical characters turn in fictional ones. In order to avoid the portrayal of the King’s misconduct, the jester Rigoletto becomes Verdi’s main character.

Rigoletto constitutes the first part of the "trilogia populare" (“Rigoletto”, "Il Trovatore" and "La Traviata") and to this day is one of the most popular Verdi operas. In 1851, its premier was celebrated enthusiastically and made Verdi famous around the world.

Renzo Giaccheri succeeded in staging a uniquely “opera for everyone” in St. Margarethen. Verdi’s music, the singing, fantastic stage design, the quarry, an amazing landscape and culinary delights – an experience for the senses!
