Bands that do not bring to mind numerous other, similar bands, musical influences, cross references and intertextualities the moment you first listen to them are hard to find. TV On The Radio, however, is something of a rarity in that respect.
Band member, producer and multi-instrumentalist rolled into one, David Sitek has a hand in the hip Brooklyn music scene as a producer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Liars and currently of his new favorites, Telepathe. Together with singer Tunde Adebimpe, Sitek constitutes the creative center of TV On The Radio.
The new album “Dear Science” is rich in influences and challenges its listeners. In “Dancing Choose”, Tunde sounds like a battle rapper, “Shout Me Out” consists of drum & bass rhythms, and “Stork & Owl” sounds like a movie soundtrack – a new reel for your mental movie projector!
For Adebimpe, working on the new album also helped him to get over a period of mourning after the death of several family members and friends. "It's like Bukowski once said, 'I write all of this stuff to get away from it," says Adebimpe, "Writing is a meditation, an exercise to put away all these painful things."
