Yamato is the name of the area around Asuka, the historical capital of Japan and the cradle of Japanese high culture. Yamata, the Asuka based Drummers of Japan, connect the traditional with the modern. Archaic strength and meditative precision, pure energy and multifaceted rhythm – the ensemble around the masterly taiko virtuoso Masa Ogawa is rooted in their home country’s Buddhist as well as the Shintoist traditions, and also draws on contemporary pop music.
With their breath-taking mix of the traditional art of drumming and contemporary choreography, Yamato – The Drummers of Japan have conquered the hearts of their audiences in numerous international metropoleis. Wherever they present their unique art, they are bound to bring down the house. Now, they are returning to Europe with their new production of the fascinating theatre event Matsuri.
Matsuri and the art of taiko are inseparably connected: the old Japanese festivity is centered around the traditional taiko drum. Its dark, striking thunder gets directly under your skin. And when drummer and drum become one in the Matsuri, the sounds of the taiko drum turn into the oto-dama, the soul of sound – and into the sound of the soul and its hopes. Consisting only of resonance and echo, the oto-dama cannot be described by means of language. It thunderously rises up into the sky and, sinking down again, envelops all the world’s people. The world slowly starts to resonate; people and universe become one.
It is overwhelming to watch the told, heavy (up to 400 kilos!) percussion instruments come to live under the strength and energy of the touch of the Yamato assembly on precisely the right spot and moment. Great virtuosity and athletic excellence are lighting a fireworks of rhythm, simultaneously meditative and explosive, to say nothing of the drummers’ art and dynamics filled with wonderful humor and marvelous jokes. Matsuri – an outstanding synthesis of the arts beyond comparison.
