Amira Medunjanin wurde in Sarajevo zu einer Zeit geboren, als die traditionelle Musik in Ex-Jugoslawien eine Hochblüte erlebte. Von ihrer Mutter lernte sie die schönsten Sevdalinke (Sevdah-Lieder), und bald war sie von der mündlich überlieferten Gesangstradition Bosnien-Herzegowinas so fasziniert, dass sie es sich zur Aufgabe machte, die Ausdruckskraft der Sevdah bis ins letzte zu erforschen und ihr eine unverwechselbare Stimme zu verleihen.
