Die 1983 in Oklahoma City gegründete Band verbindet auf ihrem neuen Album "American Head", das am 11. September erscheinen wird, Alternative-Sounds und experimentellen Pop zu einem mitreißenden, packenden Gesamtwerk über das Wayne Coyne mit seiner markanten, klaren Stimme gleitet. “Even though The Flaming Lips are from Oklahoma we never thought of ourselves as an AMERICAN band“, erklärt Wayne. "So for the first time in our musical life we began to think of ourselves as ‘AN AMERICAN BAND’…We started to think of classic American bands like The Grateful Dead and Parliament-Funkadelic and how maybe we could embrace this new vibe.”
Bei "My Religion Is You", dem letzten Track des Albums, geht es dabei um ein Gespräch, das der katholisch erzogene Wayne in jungen Jahren mit seiner Mutter führte. "Religion is there for people who don’t have a family that loves them. If their mom doesn’t love them or their dad doesn’t love them then they know that god loves them because humans can’t live without love", erklärte sie ihm. Wayne entgegnete: “Then MY religion is you”.
Das Video schließt dabei unmittelbar an die Szenen aus "“Flowers of Neptune 6" an, wenn Coyne mit einer gigantischen Blume "bewaffnet" vor einer entflammten Kulisse, die bereits im vorherigen Video zu lodern anfing, sein Herz ausschüttet.
In der knapp 40-jährigen Bandgeschichte haben die US-Amerikaner bereits dutzende Alben released, "American Head" ist für das mittlerweile 7-köpfige Ensemble selbst jedoch seit langer Zeit wieder einmal mehr ein Gefühl als ein nur ein Sound, das während der Albenproduktion entstand. "We were, while creating it, trying to NOT hear it as sounds, but to feel it. Mother’s sacrifice, Father’s intensity, Brother’s insanity, Sister’s rebellion. I can’t quite put it into words."
