Set against the stunning natural scenery of Ukanc, the Cow Ball brings one of Bohinj's most treasured traditions to life each year. Dating back to the 1950s, the event began as a celebration marking the end of both the alpine grazing season and the summer tourist season, when local herdsmen, farmers, innkeepers, and residents gathered to celebrate another successful summer together.
More than six decades later, the event is still proudly organised by the Bohinj Tourist Association, preserving the rich heritage of alpine dairy farming and the customs that have shaped life in Bohinj for generations.
The highlight of the day is the ceremonial return of the herdsmen from the high mountain pastures as they lead beautifully decorated cattle back into the valley. Carrying the traditional basenga, a wooden frame containing all the equipment needed for life and work on the mountain pastures, they recreate a centuries-old tradition that remains one of the event's most memorable spectacles. The procession is expected to begin at approximately 1:00 PM, while the event itself takes place from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Visitors can enjoy a full day of authentic cultural experiences featuring traditional folk musicians, folklore groups, and the Bohinj Brass Band. As every year, younger visitors will also have plenty to enjoy, with children's entertainment, creative workshops, and family-friendly activities throughout the day.
Food lovers can indulge in a wide selection of traditional Slovenian farmhouse dishes prepared in the local Country Kitchen. Specialities include žganci, cabbage with cracklings, homemade sausages, sour milk, and many other regional delicacies that showcase the authentic flavours of Bohinj. The musical highlight of the event will be a performance by the popular Saša Avsenik Ensemble, whose energetic performance and unmistakable melodies continue to delight audiences of all generations.
Adding to the unique atmosphere is the extensive traditional market, where local artisans and producers present a wide range of handmade products, including local cheeses, honey and bee products, embroidery, handcrafted jewellery, wooden crafts, and traditional woodenware. The programme is further enriched by traditional farm games, offering plenty of fun while reviving old customs and rural traditions.
To ensure a relaxed and convenient visit, free shuttle buses will operate to and from the event from most villages in the Bohinj area. The timetable will be published during the week preceding the event. Visitors arriving by car are encouraged to use the Danica and Kobla car parks in Bohinjska Bistrica.
