As part of the Adria Film Fest and to mark the screening of his film EIGHTY PLUS at the URANIA CEENEMA, the Serbian director and critical intellectual Želimir Žilnik will offer insights into his extraordinary cinematic oeuvre.
Žilnik, one of the most significant figures in European cinema and a co-founder of the Yugoslav Novi Film movement as well as the docudrama genre, was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlinale as early as 1969 for EARLY WORKS. Entitled ‘Shadow Citizen 2026’, the masterclass builds on his 2020 exhibition of the same name, which was curated by WHW (What, How & for Whom) for the Kunsthalle Vienna. It centres on his decades-long interest in people who remain socially invisible: migrants, the unemployed, workers, and other marginalised groups.
Using selected film examples, Žilnik will discuss his distinctive approach to filmmaking, which combines social engagement with humour and the grotesque and comedic elements, whilst always adopting a decidedly political perspective.
The masterclass offers the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into his cinematic approach and to discuss the relationship between cinema, society, and political reality.
