We’re very excited to present our immersive performance of Henry Purcell’s landmark English-Language opera “Dido and Aeneas“. The plot retells the ancient Roman love story about the Trojan War alongside the witch-hunting craze of the 17th Century: perfect for Halloween. The concert performance enhances the solemn setting of the Paulaner church with candlelight and dramatic lighting, changing throughout to fit the mood of the music.
Dido, the powerful queen of Carthage, has sworn off love but discovers her feelings for the Trojan hero Aeneas. Encouraged by her friend Belinda, she gives in to the hero. But just when their love is consummated, witches interfere. They deceive and bewitch Aeneas, steering the plot toward its tragic consequences.
The cast consists of some of the most promising rising stars in the opera world, supported by an elite orchestral ensemble to offer an intensely dramatic reading of Purcell’s finest score. Additionally, the conductor will narrate the entire performance in English to offer context, insight and historical perspective to the opera. The event lasts about one hour, in the heart of Vienna right near Karlsplatz.
