Drangsal ist der "neue Zuchtmeister deutscher Popmusik" (Spex), der "De Sade mit Zuckerguss" (FAZ) und "Weirdo vom Dorf" (Spiegel Online). Schon auf dem Debütalbum „Harieschaim“ war zu spüren, dass Gruber nicht nur ein vehementer Künstler und talentierter Musiker, sondern auch riesiger Musikfan ist. Mit Mitte 20 verfügt er über ein popkulturelles Wissen, das dem der meisten anderen - ob gleichaltrig oder doppelt so alt - weit überlegen ist. Vor allem Tool und Metallica habe er in den zwei Jahren seit Veröffentlichung seines erfolgreichen Debüts gehört, sagt er.
